Bonus interview

This episode is not a regular explorer themed one but rather back to the first season’s focus on archives. Here I interview the creator of the podcast Transmissions from Jonestown Shannon Howard who has used archive audio material in the form of tape recordings to tell the story of the Jonestown massacre/suicide in Guyana 40 years ago. I didn’t know anything about this horrible mass suicide when I happened upon her podcast but I was intrigued that she used the recordings that the cult, Peoples Temple and its leader Jim Jones, hade made to build the story. The podcast was so well done that I wanted to know more about its creator and how and why she did the it. It turned out that she spent three years making the first seven episodes and before that she spent 5 years digitizing the tape recordings for the archive (Alternative Considerations of Jonestown & Peoples Temple at San Diego state university).  I’m normally not into true crime podcasts but the story of the Jonestown massacre is something …

The Voyager -Jill Heinerth

This episode is about the explorer archetype The Voyager. The Voyager is very much like an adventurer in the way they challenge themselves physically. But the adventurer often sets out alone to test his or her limits and this is where the two differs.  The kinds of challenges a voyager take on are more like missions or bigger projects like finding new continents or landing on the moon. They travel to explore hostile environments and must bring with them everything needed for survival.  And in this sense a diver is a voyager.   We meet Jill Heinerth, an experienced cave diver and Explorer in Residence for the Royal Canadian National Geographics society. When she was a little girl she dreamed of being an explorer and today she is! We talked about what it is she explores under the surface, taking big risks, how she works with scientists as a diver, the environmental changes she see in the arctic areas and how important water is for all of us. There is also a bonus episode where …

Ep 6 Sarah WIlliams

The Adventurer – Sarah Williams

We are revisiting the Explorer Archetype I call The Adventurer, and this time a very much alive one! Sarah Williams have done extraordinary challenges like Marathon des Sables where you do 6 marathons over 6 days in the Morrocan desert. She has also hiked thru the Appalachian Trail in the US, which is 3540 kilometers in 100 days.   This is a story about creating more opportunities and possibilities for yourself.  Sarah Williams started out in a very traditional career in the banking sector in the center of London, until she realized this was not the life she wanted. In this episode we talk about The transition she did from the banking career to a new lifestyle with adventures and the business supporting this. Today she has created a successful podcast Tough Girl Challenges where she interviews female explorers, adventurers, athletes and everyday women who have overcome great challenges, and a community around it. What she gets to explore as an adventurer. Creating a new life and lifestyle for yourself. How challenges and adventures breaks your …

She writes, photographs, draws, research, collects, & paints, alongside creates installations, records sound and makes music. Konstnären (in Swedish) – Lena Rydén

This episode is about the explorer archetype The Artist. I’ve tried to find someone to interview in English but haven’t been able to pull it off so this episode is in Swedish, so if you don’t understand Swedish this episode is not for you. But there will be episodes in English about The Artist archetype so keep an eye or an ear out for coming episodes. Cover Photo: AnnaCarin Isaksson Music: What is the Journey? by Colin Mutchler (c) 2014 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution (3.0) license. http://ccmixter.org/files/commonsplice/45492 Ft: Doxe bensound-acousticbreeze Royalty free music from Bensound

THE ARCHIVES PODCAST

Bonus: Pilgrimage (in Swedish) -Anne-Louise Nyman

This is a bonus episode about wandering, and specifically about pilgrimage. I met Anne-Louise Nyman at Lödöse museum to talk to her about her pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago trail, or The Way of Saint James as it’s also called, in France and Spain. The interview is Swedish so if you don’t understand Swedish this episode is not for you. But this is an exception so keep an eye or ear out for the next episode that will be in English as usual. The Adventurer

The Adventurer – The Kontiki Museum

In this episode we take a look at the adventurer. This is the type of person who typically travel and explores the physical world. Either to discover new unknown places or to travel to already known places but in new ways. It is a person who wants an extraordinary life. The adventurer wants to challenge him or her self and push physical and mental limits. This is what the Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl did in 1946 when he sailed on a balsa wood raft from Peru on the western coast of South America to the Polyneesian Islands in the Pacific ocean. I visited the Kon-Tiki museum in Oslo Norway and met Reidar Solsvik, curator at the museum, who told me more about Thor Heyerdahl and what made him this archetypical adventurer.
